I am realy astonished that my iPhone will not be conected to my Mac via bluetooth. Anything I do wrong. I have no WiFi yet. Any idea about this? thank you, Larry G5 dual 2.3/4,5 gigRam/ATI 9600 128MB-PB G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.11)   EIZO CG 21"+ EIZO L985ex 21"

It's by design. The iPhone supports only the hands-free and headset Bluetooth profiles, no file transfer or music streaming (A2DP) over Bluetooth is possible. 17" CD MBP, iPhone 3G, iPodTouch   Mac OS X (10.4.11)   ? since the ][e

thank you for fast and clear answer to my question ! I realy did not like my Sony Ericcson P990i. I was so happy to see the iPhone coming up. But for connecting to devices and exchanging files the iPhone behaivor is like a Diva What is the solution when I am on the road and I want to exchange Data to my Powerbook, when there is no Airport Basic station around ? (supposing I would buy one of those )? thank you, larry G5 dual 2.3/4,5 gigRam/ATI 9600 128MB-PB G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.11)   EIZO CG 21"+ EIZO L985ex 21"

The only way to share files is with file transfer apps from the app store (File Magnet, Air Sharing, Data Case). Those work over Wi-Fi, and both the iPhone and the computer must be on the same Wi-Fi network. That can be a wireless hotspot on the road, or you can create a wireless network on your PB (click the Airport icon in the menu bar, select Create Network) and log onto it using the iPhone. 17" CD MBP, iPhone 3G, iPodTouch   Mac OS X (10.4.11)   ? since the ][e

Does anyone know if there is a bluetooth adapter that will connect to the bottom of the iPhone to transfer files? I just thought of this after reading this post and didn't know if there are any adapter that will connect to the bottom of the phone and allow bluetooth data transfer. No, there is not and will not be one. 3rd party apps cannot access the dock connector. Since music can be sent out via the dock connector already, the adapters for A2DP (music over BT to stereo headphones) work; that's not the case for data files. 17" CD MBP, iPhone 3G, iPodTouch   Mac OS X (10.4.11)   ? since the ][e

I hate how Apple never lets anybody else be creative with their products. I mean think about if Apple stopped being so close ended to 3rd party ideas. I mean no video on the iPhone even though it's possible, no Bluetooth data transfer because they crippled the Bluetooth stack, etc. Oh well though, I still love the phone! Envisions99 I agree. still...my opinions on Apple..... If you just try to put yourself in their position you will understand better. Music Rights, security, every body wants something like this and like that- with all they have to consider and take care to get not sued- it is no wonder thta there are some restrictions. And why ? because they are the only one to realy care an respond to questions and claims. Ever tried to get help from Sony and other Bigies ? Its like talking to a wall.Their support is just a not specific call center. Or did somebody read recently that Sony Erricson was called before the judge because their Cellphones are failing after third time repair (true story), their batteries are burning, their music devices dont let you transfer the music you bought(MiniDisc) and so on? Seldom right?! If I read news about Apple, I just wonder how many legal challenges Apple has to face. Looks like kind of sport in the US, to try to get money out of Apple. `Oh, my laptop did not work last night so I could not read the email from my love. I realy became so depressed and my heart aches therefore soooo much . I aske Apple to compensate for this with ähhh.... 1 million $ ?! ` cheers, ;-)arry G5 dual 2.3/4,5 gigRam/ATI 9600 128MB-PB G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.11)   EIZO CG 21"+ EIZO L985ex 21"

I can see your point a little bit, but lets think about this for a minute. A perfect example is this, does a gun manufacturer get sued every time one of their guns is used in a murder or robber? No, because it's not the manufacturer's fault for how the gun was used. Same thing goes here, Apple created a product and they cannot dictate how people use it, and they aren't responsible for what people do with it. The only reason Apple is creating all these "restrictions", and by restrictions I mean not implementing key features, is because they want control and reasons to get us to buy the next model they come out with. There is no reason a phone shouldn't have full bluetooth capabilities, it's almost a standard in every single phone out there, ESPECIALLY smartphones. I mean what about other little features that should have been included in the iPhone but aren't, just to name a couple: -Landscape SMS and Email (I mean why wouldn't this be in there?) -Ability to change the text, email, or voicemail ringtone. Apple has always put too many restrictions on all of their products, they need to realize that people want choice, not someone telling them what they want and not giving them options. 16GB iPhone 3G and PC: Q6600, 4GB RAM, 8800 GTX, 2TB Storage   Windows Vista

"Apple has always put too many restrictions on all of their products," Do you have some examples? They were too restrictive on OS 8? Your analogy on guns doesn't work in this situation. The problem Apple has is they operate a music store and they have to maintain contracts/relations with the various producers/labels/artists, etc. This goes back to the iPod not coming with a means to sync back to the computer (not even with purchased songs in the beginning), in order to stay on good terms and have product for the iTunes Store they had to make certain concessions. I would guess the the lack of the Bluetooth transfer protocol is a similar decision. The landscape SMS and Email probably has more to do with user testing and preference than any "restriction". Same for the text, email, and voicemail ringtone. Also has to do with priorities and doesn't mean you won't see it in the future. Ok lets see: -SwirlyMMS is a app that works for sending and receiving MMS, but Apple will never allow it because they don't want MMS on their phone. -You can't install a MAC OS in a VMware on a Windows machine because they won't allow it, but there is VMware Fusion for the MAC so you can use Windows. -You couldn't install a MAC OS on any computer but a MAC. -The hardware on a MAC is predetermined by Apple and you can't do anything about it, whereas a Windows machine you can choose what hardware you want. The analogy on guns does work, its the same situation, just a different scenario. Apple didn't have to cripple Bluetooth in order to stay on good terms, there are plenty of other ways people can transfer music and files on their iPhone (Wi-Fi, USB Cable, Internet, etc). I guess everybody has different opinions, but unless you actually work for Apple you'll never completely understand their decisions..... 16GB iPhone 3G and PC: Q6600, 4GB RAM, 8800 GTX, 2TB Storage   Windows Vista

So if you don't work for Apple how do you know whether BT transfer is an issue? The other items are related to the Apple closed system, I was referring to "restrictions" on the Mac itself, like the ones on the iPhone. Sounds like you are happily in the Windows world, I'm surprised you don't have a Windows Mobile phone. Hi Envision99, I respect your opinion on the restriction of Apple. Regarding the idea to create a perfect symbioses of hardware and Operating System I understand Apple and thats why decided to buy there computers 12 years ago and never regretted this decision, because they stand for what they do and are able to develop free of bounds. This is a free choice to go for, ore not. Looking back there where many times that people-even Mac users complained on something or where afraid of certain changement in the development. I just remember when OS X came along. Many Mac users said this will be the end. Then we saw that is was great. Microsoft needed years to produce something similar with Vista. On one side this is a kind communication between the producer and the customer. Apple always enhanced to the better later on. And the business-customer relationship is therefore very strong. And on the other hand Apple sometimes was already preparing silently a new service or product in the background and once it was out all criticism was silenced and everybody was astonished and happy. When Apple moved to Intel many said this will be the end, Now all are happy and Apple stronger. I don´t say that I like every thing they do, but I always had the feeling that the customer is respected and development turns to the better. As long as they keep this Philosophy I stay with them. I have already posted and wrote to Apple on the fact that iPhone does not support copy/paste and that you can not attach vCards, something that seems totally crazy for the computer company that bought and developed an OS that is named for its ease of use. Why is it not on the iPhone? If Apple would just be restrictive for the sake, why can you do it on the operating system? There must be a important reason behind this. This is why I said in my former post, that we should try to put ourself in there position to understand whats going on. I speculate one reason could be iTunes. Apple is fighting that we own the music that we buy there for a reasonable price. some month ago the music industry wanted more money for each song. Until now due to Apple we pay still the same price. The music industry become very restrictive since they can monitor who buys, loads down and share the music. So Apple has to make sure that they are not paranoid about the ability of the iPhone. This is a hard Poker. Now I want to turn now to other companies and there restrictions. Years ago I used Nokia Phones. They never offered a business suit application for Mac user. At that time 10 Million Apple users where not worth to include an Apple version of their Sync application. When I asked why, they just said buy a third part App. Then I owned the Sony Erricson P 900i, P910, and later the P990i. Nothing for Mac users on their CD. And this was a smart-phone above € 700,00. I had to run a PC only for the purpose to back up my data in their suite on Windows ! After a major update the Symbian OS they used on the P900, was not able to sync back the data from the former version. If I would not have backed up ( via BL ) all vCards on the Mac, I would have been in troubles. Music files I imported via BlueTooth from my Mac to the P990 was patly not recognized. (all mp3), not to speak of that Japanese titles where not understood and therefore not able to be played. Now when we look at Apple, there is iTunes for Windows and Safari to. iPhone Apps are offered for both worlds. They bring landscape sms and email and copy/paste for text. So i was and I m very happy that the iPhone is out. OK, there is no video on it now, but to tell you the truth, as I am a quality freak I don´t miss it. By the way Bias did a great Job on their sound recorder recently recorded somebody playing Piano and it is astonishing quality once you got it to your desktop. For the camera (I am Photographer) I have to say that the color engine on the iPhone does a great job, compared to what I had before on any other phone. More pixel than 2 million just gives you not more quality and imagine the energy that is used to calculate a 8 million pixel picture in your handy ! I hope that all your wishes become true. all the best ! G5 dual 2.3/4,5 gigRam/ATI 9600 128MB-PB G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.11)   EIZO CG 21"+ EIZO L985ex 21"

As I respect your opinion. I understand that everybody is going to have different opinions, especially the entire Windows v Apple debate, which will probably never end. Anyways, I've always been a fan of the whole give people freedom aspect of computers. Now I don't mean to give people total and complete freedom, there needs to be some level of control on the manufacturers part, but there should be flexibility. The AppStore does give people flexibility when it comes down to the iPhone, but yet Apple still denies certain software and ideas that could make the phone so much more than it is (even though I love it to death and think it's unbelievably amazing). I just hate the fact that there are so many amazing ideas and capabilities that are available if you jailbreak your phone (which is against the EULA) that aren't available regularly because Apple will not allow them. Now I understand why Apple regulates this, but I don't understand why they deny some amazing ideas from being released on the AppStore. You spoke of Landscape Email and SMS, and copy and paste on the appstore, what apps are you talking about? I've seen a couple for the Landscape Email, but none for the SMS or the Copy/Paste. 16GB iPhone 3G and PC: Q6600, 4GB RAM, 8800 GTX, 2TB Storage   Windows Vista

You can create a wireless network on the PowerBook and have the iPhone connect to it. In the Airport menu item on the right side of the screen select Create Network. This will make your PowerBook the wireless base station. Or you could buy an Airport Express and take that with you when travelling. MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.5.5)

I recently downloaded and installed air sharing from the app store. I now have air sharing on my iPhone. My question is how do I go about setting up my iPhone and computer in order to share files. I think i would create a network on my computer, but I have questions. Can I call the network anything I want. Does my computer have to be online, I have the Internet on my phone, just wondering if I can create a network with my iPhone and computer with wifi with both devices offline? Do I have to do anything to my iPhone to create the network?

Jamesapp, It is as you you say, you may create a network between your Computer and the iPhone. if you are familiar with the systemsettings just go ahead. ( 4 the Mac => you need to make settings in "sharing/service/Internet/Firewall?" and create the network with the application "Internet Connection") the Air sharing and the other work realy fine as I found out. If you are unsure and you are still in the 90days free support for your iPhone ore an Apple computer, Air Extrem Card and so on, call them (need patience sometimes) and you´ll be fine. all the best G5 dual 2.3/4,5 gigRam/ATI 9600 128MB-PB G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.11)   EIZO CG 21"+ EIZO L985ex 21"

I need help setting up air sharing. I called apple the one guy I talked to said I need a wireless router. Do I need a wireless router to use air sharing? I created a network on my MacBook pro. And then I launched air sharing. One thing I found confusing was under air sharing help, under connecting it said" that there is no ip address now," in air sharing main screen on the bottom where the ip address should be it says" something like no wi-fi network." According to air sharing help, I should be able to view my iPhone in the finder but I don't see it. Any help would be appreciated.

I understand that some things have a reason, I mostly rely on some greater purpose for something not to work. But if you can send pictures through e-mail why not through MMS or bluetooth? It would make the telecom providers very happy to make MMS work, since they charge for it. So I also don't get why bluetooth doesn't function fully, I just can't see the reason for it. My problem is: I want to use the app 'Air Mouse' for a school project. We've designed something that requires the gyrotechnic mouse. But we also need internet to present our product. The only way to use the Air Mouse is through VPN or Ad Hoc. VPN doesn't work on the schools network, because it's secured too well. And if I use Ad Hoc, the internet won't work, because we only have wireless at school! SO: I want to be able to use bluetooth for this stuff! MacBook   Mac OS X (10.5.5)
