On: iPhone 3G 16GB v.2.2
So I have tried many times to get Apple's 'trash' to work as gMail's 'archive' on every iteration since 1.2 on my old iPod touch. I have tried following the now horribly out of date Google directions; I have tried following apple built-in solution; I have tried playing with the IMAP folder behaviors in the advanced settings... - nothing. Is there anybody out there that has actually successfully gotten the mail.app to archive a message from gMail's inbox when pressing the trash button at the bottom of the message? Yes?- please tell me what you did. No?- When the **** is Apple going to fix this? Even my old Windows Mobile gag could get this right.
For now I have just fwd'd a copy of my inbox to yahoo - at least it's push - but I'd really rather not have to sort my mail twice. Homebrew Windows Vista Cray is my homeboy

I had that problem after installing 2.2 on my phone. When I called the tech had me go to setting and create a new folder under my yahoo account called trash and then check that as my trash. Once that worked we were able to switch back to the original trash can. This is all done in settings under the mail option.
But I no longer have a trash can to delete unwanted photos. There is a trash problem the tech said and they are working on a patch. MAC G5 Mac OS X (10.5.5)

I don't think this is what I am talking about. Yahoo, as far as I know, works differently from gMail; in gmail the default "trash" should not be a delete or even a trash folder, but just removing it from the inbox and archiving it, so it is searchable and recoverable if needed later. gMail has a trash folder - it is just not the default to use it. I think you've correctly identified this as being an issue you have with Gmail (wanting to change how delete works), and not something that's iPhone related.

Re: problem with gMail
Not really, Apple admits to the problem here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1609?viewlocale=en_US - but their solution does not work for me... but then again it is also horribly out of date. Even when I was on 1.1.3 on my iPod Touch it did not work. Homebrew Windows Vista Cray is my homeboy
