Using UK 02 iPhone in Australia

Hi,
I am moving to Australia for 6 months and would like some guidance on using my iPhone. Since I got a 3G phone, I cannot imagine life without it!!!! But, I understand the data roaming charges will be really expensive. Does anyone have any solutions??? Can I get a local sim card and put this in the iPhone?
Any other ideas??
